ADAC Camping guide has presented Croatia as a high quality camping destination with amazing nature and a destination regularly investing into raising the quality of its offering. ADAC particularly point out the quality of the sanitary facilities in camping sites in Istria and North Dalmatia as well as the ever increasing number of quality and equipped lots in the camps. The guide, celebrating its 60th anniversary, introduces 103 Croatian camp sites, 19 of which have been marked with a special symbol, representing a significant improvement in quality compared to last year.
Two campsites received the prestigious rating 'Super platz', the 'red plaquette'. These are the camping grounds Park Umag, which received the same rating last year, and Zaton, which has received the 'Super platz' rating for the past four years. Only 80 European camps have received this rating, for their above-average offering in sanitary facilities, camp site, hospitality and commerce, recreation and animation.
Campsites that have received the yellow ADAC plaquette, signifying campsites that have achieved remarkable results, a significant improvement and left a good impression, are the same as last year – Zaton in Zadar, Kanegra, Stella Maris, Park Umag and Finida in Umag, Lanterna and Solaris in Poreč, Poljana in Mali Lošinj, Vira on Hvar and Nevio in Orebić.
Croatian campsites have received an average rating of 2.45. The highest rating to Istrian camps – 3.26 – and the largest improvement was achieved by the campsites of the Zadar County, with an average rating of 2.38. It was evaluated by criteria of the overall development of the campsites, accessibility of facilities and activities, gastronomy, investments etc. Croatian campsites are best in the segment of supply and gastronomy, while animation of guests received the lowest rating.
Croatian camping grounds are also featured in the ADAC guide for camp rest areas. Out of the 3,500 rest areas in 21 European countries, 15 are in Croatia, two more than last year. Six of them are in Istria, six in Dalmatia, two in Lika and one on Kvarner. The very first Istrian camp rest area, Farm Pino in Katun on Poreština, is the only one to have received the rating 'Komfort Stellplatz' for the quality of its services and facilities. This is the very first award given to a Croatian camp rest area.
There are around 6000 camping rest areas registered in Europe, 3500 of which are covered by the 2010 ADAC guide. One of the leading Dutch camping guides, ANWB Campinggids, has put 82 Croatian camps in its 2010 issue. It has given the best rating to Lanterna, Solaris and Ulika from Poreč and Orsera from Vrsar. The swimming pool complexes in the six Istrian camps received the maximum rating. These are the pools in Lanterna and Zelena Laguna in Poreč, Valalta and Veštra in Rovinj, and Park Umag and Bi Village in Fažana. The prize 'ANWB recommends' is won by camp Kovačine on Cres, Konobe and Pila in Punto, Adriatic in Šibenik and Rio and Zaton in Zadar. |

The nudist campsite Valalta in Rovinj, the first four star campsite in Croatia, was recently the first campsite in Europe to get the naturist quality system certificate which is given out by the International Naturist Federation (INF) and the Croatian Naturist Association (DNH).
This is a certificate that guarantees guests a holiday in accordance with the principles of naturism, which isn’t the case in all naturist camps. The idea about the campsite certification system was started by the Dutch naturist association because of comments made by the members of the INF that there is a very wide understanding of the naturist and naturism offer, which distances them from original naturist principles. It was concluded that there was a need to create a standardised framework for the unification of basic naturist needs. The idea was suggested by the INF in Valalta in 2004 and later confirmed at the congress in Spain in 2006 and last year in Brazil. The certification of naturist campsites throughout Europe should completed in the following three years. The experiences, which would be gathered in this trial period, would form the basis of the acceptance of certificates as an INF directive for other member countries of the INF at the congress in 2012 in Konversada in Croatia.
The nudist camp Valalta, was opened at the end of 1960’s, and stretched along the gentle shores the length of the northern part of the Rovinj coast. The first naturists’ camped rough on this area in 1954 and Valalta was opened in 1968. It was then the second nudist campsite in Croatia after Konversada. The campsite was sold out for the next ten years.

Last tourist season in Croatian campsites was extremely successful and has justified the new investments in the quality of camps and justified the great reputation of Croatian camps and of Croatia as a country with the potential to become the most competitive camping destination on the Mediterranean.
According to collected data of most Croatian camps, the number of overnight stays increased by 2.5 % on average this year, compared to 2008. This, the owners point out, is a result, which – considering the global recession, has exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations.
For instance, in Istria, the most developed camping destination in Croatia, the number of overnight stays increased by 2.6 percent, while some of the top quality campsites in Dalmatia recorded an increase of 10 percent. Particularly impressive were the results in the pre- season, in which the number of overnight stays increased by 4.5 percent. In August, the number of stays jumped by 10 percent, compared to last year.
Traditionally, the greatest number of visitors was German, Slovenian, Dutch, Italian, Austrian and Czech, who, altogether, make up 82 percent of overnight stays in camps.
Altogether, Croatia has 232 camps and 302 small household campsites and campgrounds, with the overall accommodation capacity of 224,000 persons. Campsites and campgrounds make up a quarter of the accommodation capacities in Croatia. |
